Sturdy Health Introduces Innovative AI-Based Eye Screening Tool to Prevent Blindness in Patients with Diabetes

Diabetic retinopathy is the #1 cause of preventable blindness in working-age adults, and it often develops with no early warning signs. That is why annual eye screenings are essential for people with diabetes. Early detection can make all the difference in protecting long-term vision.
To make this important screening easier and more accessible, Sturdy Health has introduced new innovative AI-based technology at primary care locations in Plainville and Norton. By offering this service during routine primary care visits, Sturdy Health is making preventive eye care more accessible and helping patients stay on top of their overall health.
The new eye screening device captures a quick, non-invasive series of photographs of the back of the eye. These images are then analyzed using an FDA-cleared AI platform to detect signs of diabetic retinopathy. The process takes only a few minutes and can be performed during a regular appointment with a primary care provider, eliminating the need for a separate visit to an eye specialist for many patients.
Sturdy Health is grateful to Dr. Owen Debowy, whose generous support made it possible to bring this advanced equipment to our primary care practices. By providing access to innovations like this, Sturdy Health continues its commitment to providing coordinated, patient-centered care, bringing essential screenings and preventive services closer to home.
