Multiple Sclerosis Center at Sturdy Memorial Hospital
The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center at Sturdy Memorial Hospital was established in 1995 to provide individualized, specialized, and coordinated care for people living with MS. Our multidisciplinary team works with each patient to manage symptoms, address the physical and emotional challenges of MS, and support overall well-being.
Recognized as a Center for Comprehensive MS Care
The MS Center is proud to be recognized as a Comprehensive Care Center by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This designation reflects our commitment to providing coordinated, specialized care for people living with MS.
As a Comprehensive Care Center, we offer:
- A multidisciplinary team that includes neurology, rehabilitation, nursing, and social work
- Individualized treatment plans that address your physical, emotional, and social well-being
- Access to MS research, therapies, and resources through our partnership with the National MS Society
- Patient-centered care focused on supporting quality of life at every stage of MS
Team Approach
At the MS Center, we use a team-based approach to address the complex and changing needs of people living with MS. Our team includes neurologists, physical therapists, nurses, and social workers, each bringing specialized knowledge to your care. Team members evaluate your symptoms and needs, communicate with one another, and work together to develop a treatment plan tailored to you.
You are an important part of that team. We listen to your concerns, goals, and experiences and consider them when making decisions about your care and managing your MS.
Personalized Treatment Plans
Your MS treatment plan will be based on your symptoms, needs, and goals. Depending on your individual needs, treatment and services may include:
- Medications to treat MS and related symptoms
- Baclofen pump management for pain and spasticity
- Botox® for migraine, cervical dystonia, and spasticity
- Infusion therapy
- Physician, nursing, physical therapist, and social services assessments
- Individual physical therapy exercise programs and referrals for outpatient physical therapy and/or occupational therapy
- Referrals to other services, which may include imaging, neurosurgery, weight management, behavioral health, endocrinology, rheumatology, and Visiting Nurse Association services.
Your Visit
Please allow at least one hour for your appointment. After the initial intake by the nurse, you will have an individual appointment with a neurologist. Each team member will perform an evaluation and then collaborate with other team members to develop a treatment plan. Family members and loved ones are welcome and encouraged to visit the MS Center with you for support.
We require all patients at the center to have a primary care physician. We understand that many people with MS want to continue to see their current neurologist while also receiving care at the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Sturdy Memorial Hospital. With your permission, we can send regular reports to your neurologist and primary care physician to keep them informed about your care and your progress.
Most insurance plans cover services at the MS Center. Because coverage and authorization requirements vary by plan, we recommend contacting your insurance company before your visit to determine whether prior authorization is required.
Frequency of Visits
How often you visit the MS Center will depend on your individual needs and your condition. If your MS is stable, you may need to visit only once or twice a year. We may recommend more frequent visits if your symptoms or condition change, or if you develop specific concerns that need attention.
At follow-up visits, you may only need to see the team member who can best address your needs at that time. Your care plan can be adjusted as your needs change.
