Sturdy Health is TeamBirth Recognized
Sturdy Health uses a TeamBirth approach to tailor each birth experience to a mother’s unique preferences. This collaborative model brings together the birthing parent, their support person, and the care team to promote open communication, shared decision-making, and a supportive environment where every patient feels heard and empowered.
Sturdy Health is "Birthing Friendly"
"Birthing-Friendly" is the first-ever CMS designation to describe high-quality maternity care. To earn the designation, hospitals and health systems report their progress on CMS's Maternal Morbidity Structural Measure to the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program. The measure identifies whether a hospital or health system has participated in a statewide or national perinatal quality improvement collaborative program and implemented evidence-based quality interventions in hospital settings to improve maternal health.
Sturdy Memorial Hospital Earns Prestigious Baby-Friendly Designation
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative recognizes hospitals that meet the highest standards in supporting breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding. To receive this designation, Sturdy Memorial met the comprehensive criteria of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a set of evidence-based practices proven to improve newborn health outcomes.

Keeping Your Family Close
A Family-Centered Approach to Cesarean Birth
A cesarean birth, or C-section, is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through the mother’s abdomen. Being scheduled for a cesarean birth can feel overwhelming, but if your doctor recommends a C-section, it is because they believe it is the best delivery option for you and your baby.
At Sturdy Health, our labor and delivery team offers a Family-Centered Cesarean Birth for eligible patients. This approach allows you, your support person, and your baby to remain together throughout the birth experience whenever possible.
Your support person can be with you in the surgical suite during the birth. A nurse and neonatal nurse practitioner will also be present to assess your newborn’s health and help support early skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding, when desired and medically appropriate.
During a family-centered cesarean, you may also choose to view the birth of your baby. If you do, we can use a special surgical drape with a clear viewing area so you and your support person can witness your baby’s arrival.
Preparation
If you are scheduled for a cesarean birth, you will be admitted to the hospital on the morning of your delivery. When you arrive on the Weber Maternity Unit, your nurse will bring you to your LDRP suite and help you get comfortable.
Your preoperative lab work will be completed in your suite. You will also meet with the OB/GYN performing your delivery and the anesthesiologist, who will review your anesthesia plan with you. A spinal is the most common form of anesthesia used during a cesarean birth.
After you have met with your doctor and surgical team, you will be brought to the operating room on the Weber Maternity Unit. Once your spinal anesthesia has been administered and you are ready for surgery, your support person will be able to join you at your side during the procedure.
After Delivery
Once your baby is born, they will be brought to the warming area adjoining the operating room, where the neonatal nurse practitioner will complete an initial evaluation.
After this brief assessment, and when medically appropriate, your baby will be brought to you in the operating room so you can begin bonding.
Skin-to-Skin Contact
Your baby may be placed skin-to-skin in the OR if the situation permits. Skin to skin helps to keep your baby warm and allows your new baby to adjust to the world. Your skin will provide the warmth, your heartbeat will provide the soothing sound they are used to and your voice will comfort your baby during this transition. Nurses will assist to ensure you and your baby are kept safe. Once the procedure is complete, you will be brought back to your Weber Maternity suite to recover and bond with your baby.
