Sturdy Health is TeamBirth Recognized
Sturdy Health uses a TeamBirth approach to tailor each birth experience to a mother’s unique preferences. This collaborative model brings together the birthing parent, their support person, and the care team to promote open communication, shared decision-making, and a supportive environment where every patient feels heard and empowered.
Sturdy Health is "Birthing Friendly"
"Birthing-Friendly" is the first-ever CMS designation to describe high-quality maternity care. To earn the designation, hospitals and health systems report their progress on CMS's Maternal Morbidity Structural Measure to the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program. The measure identifies whether a hospital or health system has participated in a statewide or national perinatal quality improvement collaborative program and implemented evidence-based quality interventions in hospital settings to improve maternal health.
Sturdy Memorial Hospital Earns Prestigious Baby-Friendly Designation
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative recognizes hospitals that meet the highest standards in supporting breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding. To receive this designation, Sturdy Memorial met the comprehensive criteria of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a set of evidence-based practices proven to improve newborn health outcomes.

Keeping Your Family Close
Vaginal Birth After Cesarean
If you previously delivered a baby by cesarean section (C-section) and are pregnant again, you may be wondering whether you will need a repeat C-section or if you may be able to attempt a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC).
At Sturdy Health, our experienced OB/GYNs are trained in and supportive of VBAC deliveries for appropriate candidates. Every pregnancy is different, so it is important to talk with your provider about your medical history, previous delivery, and preferences to understand whether VBAC may be an option for you.
Benefits of VBAC
Choosing whether to pursue a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC), which may result in a successful VBAC, is a personal decision made together with your care team.
There are several reasons someone may consider VBAC rather than a planned repeat C-section, including:
- Shorter recovery time
- Greater participation during the birth experience
- Avoiding another abdominal surgery
- Reducing certain risks associated with multiple C-sections in future pregnancies
Doctor Recommendations
Your doctor may not recommend a VBAC for various reasons as it may be a danger to the health and safety of you and your baby. Many of the factors that can affect your ability to have VBAC can be identified prior to delivery, this allows you to discuss all of your options and wishes for birth at great length with your OB/GYN.
Health & Safety is Our Priority
If you and your doctor agree that you are a candidate for a VBAC, you will experience the same process for labor and delivery as any woman expecting to deliver vaginally.
The health and safety of your baby is our priority – during your labor and delivery, you will be monitored closely so we can identify any complications. Your OB/GYN and your nurses will be prepared to do a repeat C-section if it becomes medically necessary.
