Preparing for Surgery
Before the scheduled day of surgery, you will either have a pre-admission interview by telephone or at the hospital. During this interview, a day surgery nurse will review your medical history, answer your questions, and discuss your care plan so you know what to expect.
On the night before surgery and morning of surgery, follow the instructions given to you about eating, drinking, smoking, and taking medications. Not following these instructions may increase the possibility of problems and may result in your surgery being delayed or rescheduled.
For details on how to prepare for your surgery day, please review this booklet. Choose your language
Day of Surgery
On the day of surgery, please arrive at the hospital at the time given to you at your pre-admission interview. Please remember not to wear any jewelry and leave other valuables at home.
When you arrive, a nurse will greet you and explain what to expect during your procedure and recovery. An IV will be started and you will meet with the anesthesiologist again. You will be given medication to help you relax before you are brought to the operating room.
Your physician/surgeon will perform the procedure in one of our multiple operating rooms or endoscopy suites. When the surgery is complete, you will be brought to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)/recovery room. You will remain at the hospital until your physician and nurse have determined it is safe for you to return home.
If you are going home the same day, you will return to the day surgery area where you will receive discharge instructions. Your family members will be able to see you here after an appropriate recovery time. You will also receive a follow-up call the next day from a nurse who will ask about your recovery and answer any questions you may have. If you’re being admitted to the hospital, you will be transferred to an inpatient room for additional care.
Recovery from Surgery
Let Sturdy Health help you get back to your daily life. Sturdy Memorial Hospital provides outpatient exercise and education programs to help patients gradually improve their exercise and endurance so they can return to their normal, daily activities. Our goal is to help our patients improve their quality of life during their road to recovery.
Pre-Operative Total Joint Education
Sturdy Health offers extensive pre-operative information and resources for patients undergoing total hip and total knee replacements. The Total Joint Pre-Operative Education Class is designed to help you feel informed, confident, and prepared before your total joint replacement. Research shows that patients who understand what to expect before, during, and after surgery often experience a smoother recovery and greater confidence throughout rehabilitation.
Led by experienced physical therapy professionals, this class provides practical information about your surgical journey and how you can optimize your recovery.
During the class you will learn:
- What to expect before, during, and after your surgery
- Preparing your home and support system for a safe recovery
- Pain management and swelling control
- Safe mobility techniques, including walking, stairs, and transfers
- Use of assistive devices such as walkers and canes
- Exercises to promote strength and mobility
- Tips for preventing complications
- Your rehabilitation plan and recovery timeline
- When to resume daily activities, work, and recreation
We encourage you to bring a family member, caregiver, or support person to the class so they can learn how to assist you during the recovery process.
